Suddenly & Peacefully at Sligo University Hospital.

John, predeceased by his parents Jim & May and his wife Carmel. Sadly missed & lovingly remembered by his children Ciara, Kelvin, Sean & Colin, daughters-in-law Catherine (Keaveney), Rebecca (Dolan-McLoughlin), brother Jimmy, sisters Marian, Kathleen (Burke), Claire (Smith), Shiela (Grennan), Anne (Ruane), Therese (Kiernan), his adored grandchildren Abbie, Ríadh, Maddox & Cian,  brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Rest in Peace.

Reposing at The Foley & McGowan funeral home, Market House, Market Yard, Sligo on Wednesday from 5pm to 6.30pm.  Funeral will leave his residence on Thursday morning at 11am to arrive at St, Anne’s Church, Sligo for Requiem mass at 11.30am followed by burial in Sligo Cemetery.

  15. My condolences to the McGowan family and all involved in Sligo Basketball on behalf of UCD Marian Basketball Club. John was a fantastic player and there were many great battles between our clubs in the 1970’s. John then moved on to do great work in coaching and motivation and I was very happy to present him with the President’s Award in the mid-1990’s. After a life well-spent, may John now rest in peace.

  17. What a wonderfully inspiring and well-deserved tribute to John this morning. So sorry to be unable to be there in person. John leaves an immense sporting legacy. For the record, I believe that John played on the Irish senior team when it recorded its first-ever European victory – against Iceland in Reykjavik with Tom O’Brien coaching. Very sincere sympathy to all the McGowan family.
