Sincere condolences to all Dermot’s family. Always the perfect gentleman and great neighbour in Hanley Terrace. Your presence will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace Dermot.
Dermot Collery ( Mr Collery, to me when I was a student of his in Summerhill College), was the stand-out teacher of my secondary years in the 1970s. He taught English to us. He had an interest in the individual student he taught. He was willing to impart the subject to any who wanted to learn. Looking back now I wish I had paid more attention in his class. He was a sensitive and gentle man even in a room of teenage boys, some of whom were not there to study.
Whenever I was passsing his street and if i had the pleasure of seeing him out the front of his house I would always stop to chat and thank him for his part in forming me. I know that he stepped away from teaching latterly and I fear it was a loss to students.
Sincere sympathy to his family and friends.
